Photo and biometric requirements for international visa applications

Photo and biometric requirements for international visa applications

Most international visa applications require recent photographs and biometric data as part of their identity verification and security procedures. While the general expectations are similar across many countries, specific technical requirements may vary by destination.

Photograph specifications

Applicants are typically required to submit one or more recent passport-sized photographs meeting strict standards. Common requirements include:

  • Size: Most embassies request photos sized 35 mm x 45 mm or 2 x 2 inches, depending on the country;

  • Background: A plain white or light-coloured background with no patterns or shadows;

  • Expression and position: Neutral facial expression, with mouth closed and eyes open, looking straight at the camera;

  • Headwear and accessories: No hats, caps, or sunglasses unless worn for religious or medical reasons. Prescription glasses may be allowed if the lenses are not tinted and there is no glare;

  • Recency: The photo must typically be taken within the last 6 months and should represent the applicant's current appearance.

Digital photo uploads for online applications may also need to meet specific pixel dimensions, file formats (often JPEG), and size limits (usually under 1 MB).

Biometric data collection

Biometric identification is now a standard part of many visa application processes. This includes:

  • Fingerprints: Collected electronically using a biometric scanner at the visa application centre or consulate. All ten fingerprints are usually required;

  • Facial Scan: A digital scan of your face, often taken at the time of your biometric appointment;

  • Digital Signature (in some cases): Some countries require an electronic signature as part of the biometric process.

Exemptions

Certain individuals may be exempt from providing biometrics, such as:

  • Children below a specific age: Often under 12 years old;

  • Elderly applicants: Depending on the country, applicants over a certain age (commonly over 70 or 80) may be exempt;

  • Individuals with physical disabilities: Those unable to provide fingerprints due to medical reasons may receive an exemption, subject to documentation.

Validity and reuse

Some countries allow previously collected biometric data to be reused for subsequent applications submitted within a set time frame (e.g., 5 years), reducing the need for re-submission. Others may require fresh data for each application.

It is important to consult the official website of the embassy or visa application center of the destination country for precise specifications, as failure to meet photo or biometric standards may result in processing delays or application rejection.
