Traveling with minors: required documents and approvals

Traveling with minors: required documents and approvals

Traveling with children requires some extra preparation. Many countries and airlines have specific rules to prevent child trafficking and ensure safe travel for minors. Here is what you should know:

1. Essential travel documents

  • Passport: Every child, including infants, typically requires their own passport.

  • Visa: If your destination requires a visa, ensure you obtain one for the minor in advance.

  • Birth certificate: Some countries may request a birth certificate to verify the relationship between the child and accompanying adult.

2. Consent documents for minors traveling without both parents

If a child is traveling with only one parent, a relative, or an unrelated adult, you may need:

  • Notarized parental consent letter signed by the non-traveling parent or both parents if the child is traveling alone. This should include details of the trip, the accompanying adult (if any), and contact information for parents or guardians.

  • Copy of the non-traveling parent’s identification to accompany the consent letter.

  • Some countries may require this document to be apostiled or legalized depending on international agreements.

3. Airline requirements

  • Airlines may have their own forms or rules for unaccompanied minors. Check these in advance.

  • Many airlines offer an Unaccompanied Minor (UMNR) service, which provides additional supervision and support during the journey.

  • Fees and age restrictions for UMNR services vary by airline.

4. Additional approvals

  • For certain destinations, government clearance or approval may be required for minors traveling alone or with one parent. Check your home country’s border authority and the destination country’s entry requirements.

  • Transit countries may also require approval documents, even if the minor is not staying in the country.

5. Practical tips

  • Carry extra copies of all important documents and keep them in both digital and printed formats.

  • Inform the child’s school if the travel will occur during school terms, especially for extended trips.

  • Prepare the child by explaining the process of airport security and immigration, especially if they are traveling alone.

Proper documentation helps ensure a smooth journey for minors and avoids potential delays at immigration checkpoints.
